| Customer Reviews: Mediocre stand at best August 10, 2010 William Connor (Honolulu, Hi) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I got a distinctly less favorable impression from the product than the three prior reviewers.
Pros:
-This product feels heavy and well-built. The steel parts, excluding the iron base, are chrome plated and I would be surprised if this thing rusted anytime soon.
-Gator clips are strong enough to hold most items
-Illuminated magnifying lens is great. No weird distortion as long as the object you're viewing is less than 3 inches away. The LEDs do a fantastic job of illuminating your workspace
Cons:
-The parts are adjusted and held in place with simple metal thumbscrews. Considering that this thing is essentially made out of metal cylinders, things like the gator clips tend to rotate around their support shafts even when you torque the living bajesus out of them.
-Minor adjustments to your setup are somewhat difficult and absolutely inconvenient because you have to torque the thumbscrews so hard to even get them to pretend to stay in place.
-The pencil iron holder was incompatible with my iron. There was no means to get it stay in there without the barrel touching the side of the holder. This resulted in a cold iron and a hot stand. Not a good thing.
Conclusion:
While I enjoy the product in theory; the lack of quick fine resolution adjustments, the inability to keep the gators from spinning along the horizontal support shaft, and the fact that the iron holder was unusable with my pencil means that I'm paying to have this thing shipped back and I'm off to continue my search for a suitable work stand.
Well Made June 24, 2010 Justin M 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is great for soldering printed circuit boards. The base is heavy and provides a good foundation. The magnifying glass is large and helps to make soldering small joints easier. It has a place to store your soldering iron plus an area on the base for a sponge to keep your soldering tip clean. Overall, this is a great product.
Pretty, pretty, good May 21, 2010 M. Thomas (Tampa, FL USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am newly getting into electronics kit building, repair and general experimentation so my advice may not be as helpful as someone more seasoned. I bought this together with a 25 watt Weller pencil iron and I must say - so far so good. The item is pretty well constructed however the base while being made of a heavy (iron?) metal, doesn't seem to be large enough to provide the best stability. Since the stand has the large lighted magnifying glass it seems a little top heavy, but again - I don't have much experience. I like the overall quality, and feel it has good value and is a useful item for newbies. One thing though, the coil which holds the iron might could be slightly taller to hold the iron more upright. Perhaps my concerns are simply that I'm not used to working with a small 700 degree tool that produces molten lead? Hope this helps.
