| Customer Reviews: Milwaukee Random Orbit Sander August 27, 2010 Robert D. Keller (baton rouge, La.) This sander is a " HONEY." I have only used it on two small projects, but it is smooth and easy to operate and produces as fine of a finish as I have ever seen with a sander. And it is adjustable from 5 to 12,000 RPMs, which allows you to do a lot more jobs than the fixed ones at 12,000 RPMs. The handle is really comfortable, and the dust bag has a wire frame to hold it open to catch all the dust from the sanding. I also bought the sanding discs from Mirka, and even though they are a little more expensive, they work well on the sander and probably will last longer than some cheaper ones.
Weak cutting power, leaves whorl, still a good machine August 16, 2010 billisutra - the way of the cat (new york city) While Milwaukee still makes some great products, this is not one of them.
Overall feel and usage of the machine is good quality, and the dust collection port is probably one of the best for these machines. Unfortunately it does not have the cutting power or smoothness as advertised.
The sanding pad seems to be very finicky as to when and how much it wants to rotate--after using this machine for the last couple of weeks I find it consistently under-performing for heavy-duty sanding (removing old finish on furniture). The pad will often simply tremble rather than rotate or orbit. I would assume this is a problem with the gearing. Because of this erratic nature, it also leaves a lot of whorl on the piece--I've spent nearly as much time re-sanding as I have doing the "power" sanding. For example: cut the old finish off a tabletop working my way through 80-100-120-150-180-220 grits with the sander; wetting the piece lightly revealed a lambswool-like texture of whorls on alder and red oak. So I went back to hand sanding starting at 100 grit.
Porter Cable used to make the industry standard electric R.O. sander, and sadly that is a piece of crap now too.
Overall, if this is for light household projects and you're not obsessive about the finish (I'm a furniture maker, I HAVE to be obsessive), this is a decent machine.
For heavy or professional use, it seems that electric sanders are just no good until you get to the $300+ range, at which point it's actually more economical (and more powerful) to invest in a pneumatic setup with a small compressor and sander--fewer parts to fail, and a far superior finish.
Better Than Porter Cable August 13, 2010 Brett Mayer Far superior to the Porter Cable. The bag is way better, and the variable speed is nice. The cord is nice and long, and even the case is better than the Porter Cable. This is the one to get!
Amazing August 11, 2010 Keith Hebert (Boston, MA) I originally bought this thinking it would be a smaller hand sander I could use to finish some doors and cabinets. This thing is a monster and incredibly powerful. Deal of the century on Amazon. Within three minutes, my doors were smooth and beautiful. MOst importantly, all parts of the sanding disk were used, so there was no waste. Cheap and a money saver. If you're considering this or the DeWalt, this is the one for you. It's amazing
wow July 25, 2010 Bruce Lee Wentworth (BURNHAM, ME, US) just got this sander and what a differance it makes in wood working i would recomend to any home owner or woodworker
