| Customer Reviews: OK August 6, 2010 Bryce You get quite a lot for the money with this product, although I have already broken a couple of the drillbits (luckily the ones that have duplicates). Given the price I paid I think it generally meets expectations.
poor quality February 13, 2010 Adam W. Bushmaker (Los Angeles) I bought these to have a complete set of drill bits in a neatly organized case for most household jobs. I was disappointed with the quality and so returned them. I only gave two stars because the Sportsman's Guide made returning the item easy (prepaid return shipping label emailed to me).
The main issue is the case; it's very poor quality plastic, and it came with cracks all over it and the sidewall thickness on one of the latch mechanisms was so thin and flexible that it made the mechanism unworkable. The drill bits themselves were of visibly poor quality. The process used to make them must have been imprecise, because the cutting surfaces and edges were visibly irregular and rough; it kind of looked like someone made them by hand or something. In particular, the edge of the cutting surface on the titanium bits wasn't the widest point on the bit, which means the flutes would end up doing the cutting on the edge of the hole, where the cutting should (ideally) be most precise. Some of the drill bits didn't fit in the corresponding sized hole on the included sizing plate, but some fit loosely.
To be fair, i didn't drill anything with them, I was just disappointed with the broken case and quality on inspection. I ended up buying a 90pc set by Ryobi from Home Depot, which had most of the pieces this kit had, but with only 1 or 2 copies (instead of 4-5). The price was cheaper and the quality was much better. I figure bits won't break often enough in home use to make going to the hardware store for a replacement cumbersome.
It's monsterous! February 5, 2010 Paula Stahlman (Maryland) I bought this for my son who is setting up his own home and lives too far away to borrow his father's tools. Can't beat the price for 204 pieces of anything these days.
Decent set, good price April 4, 2009 Laura L. Larsen 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
These are not top-of-the-line. For the price, though, it's a nice selection. They'll get you through a lot of household projects for a lot less than going to a big box store and picking up even a tenth of the variety in this box.
I've bent several of the black drill bits (the smaller ones) but they give you multiples of those smaller bits, so I have to give them points for that. I still haven't used all of them up -- and honestly, I can buy a better one at a hardware store in those smaller sizes and still got a great deal on the rest of the assortment.
The spade bits are especially handy. I used them to countersink my screws for my kitchen drawer handles, and a spicerack, and they worked great.
The case is pretty poor quality, especially the latches, one of which has broken off, but again -- on a price-to-value ratio, I give this set high marks. It's worth having, and then expand on it, especially if you don't know what you might need; the variety allows you to try out various sizes and types until you know what will work.
I'm a new homeowner, and would recommend this for others like me, who don't already have a set of bits.
